Just Got Served with a Restraining Order? 5 Critical Steps You Must Take Immediately

You’re blindsided. A sheriff or process server just handed you a restraining order or PFA, and now you’re overwhelmed, furious, or frozen. These orders can change your life in an instant—but only if you let them.

Here are 5 critical steps to protect your rights and stay in control:

1. Read the Order Thoroughly Don’t assume you know what it says. Every line matters. Stay-away distances, child custody changes, even temporary firearm restrictions are enforceable immediately.

2. Do Not Contact the Petitioner Even if it’s false. Even if you think it’ll “clear up with a text.” Do not call, message, or approach the person who filed the order. Violating it—even accidentally—can get you arrested.

3. Mark the Court Date You will have a chance to respond, but it’s often just 10–14 days away. If you miss it, the order can become final—and long-lasting.

4. Hire an Attorney You need to challenge the order calmly, legally, and strategically. Family courts take these matters seriously, especially when children are involved.

5. Prepare Evidence Collect texts, call logs, witness statements—anything that shows your side. False or weaponized PFAs can be exposed, but only if you present it correctly.
