How do I file for a Protection From Abuse order in Alabama?
You can file for a PFA at your local circuit or district court, usually through the clerk’s office. The petition must outline what happened, why protection is needed, and the relationship between the parties.
After filing, a judge may issue an emergency (ex parte) PFA the same day if the facts support it. A full hearing is then set—typically within 10 days—where both sides can present evidence.
Because PFAs are fast-moving and the consequences are significant, it’s wise to talk with a lawyer early. A clear, thorough petition often makes a meaningful difference.
