Do Fathers Really Have a Shot at 50/50 or Sole Custody?

It’s one of the most common questions dads ask: “Do I have a chance at getting 50/50 custody—or even sole custody?”
The answer is YES.
Family courts today are far more balanced than they were 20 years ago. Judges now recognize that children benefit from having both parents involved, as long as it’s in the child’s best interest.
To get 50/50 custody, fathers must show that they’ve been involved in the child’s life, have a stable living situation, and can support the child’s emotional and physical needs. The court will also look at communication between parents—so even if things are tense, showing restraint and maturity is key.
As for sole custody? That’s usually only granted when the other parent is unfit or dangerous. But it’s absolutely possible if the situation warrants it—especially in cases involving substance abuse, neglect, or interference with the father-child relationship.
The biggest mistake dads make? Waiting too long to act. The longer you go without a formal custody arrangement, the harder it may be to change the status quo.
